Growing up they always whispered she was too sensitive, too intuitive, there was no getting around her in terms of lies and fallacy. Matilda was a quiet presence in the never ending discords of Elena and William Pomeroy's marriage that she became exposed to things much too early. While she maintained a childlike innocence in her younger years she had a sadness and wisdom about her. She was blunt, asked too many questions that made her teacher's raise an eyebrow. When she visited friend's homes their family's had been more of a family than she had the pleasure of knowing with her parents. An only child, her mother found it hard to be a mother so she became Matilda's friend instead. She bought her daughter's love with material gifts and weekend getaways while her father was busy with work - he was always gone, always staying late, leaving early and breaking lunch dates. When Matilda was old enough she asked her mother if she was aware her husband was unfaithful and her mother's reply is a vivid memory Matilda keeps with her today; the corner of Elena's eyes wrinkle, eyes sad but her smile genuine, a hand on her daughter's shoulder, a small squeeze but she says nothing.
There was a resentment she harbored when it came to her father, Matilda loved him, he loved her his 'Tilly' as he always affectionately called her. When guests were around her parents were always the picturesque couple that many envied but it was all a farce. She became infatuted with the idea of older men, husbands, loving their wives unconditionally without straying from their marriage. The older she got the more disillusioned she became with the entire idea. She was a promiscuous teenager, always seeking solace or answers in the form of sleeping around and partying as a means to gain acceptance. Her rebellious streak was partially out of spite, a cry for attention, for her parents to act like parents instead of friends. The more they seemed to ignore their daughter's misbehavior the more reckless Matilda became.
Music had always been a passion of hers, she began writing poetry and music when she was 15 and snuck away to the Las Vegas strip with nothing but her notebook and a fake id to try and sing at open mic nights. For a time she pondered the idea of being a showgirl but only auditioned once and was rejected almost immediately. A good thing, considering she's a terrible dancer. She found her voice and honed her skills as she became more serious about pursuing a career in music. In her junior year she dropped out of high school and obtained a GED instead, knowing full well that one day she would be able to support herself - a naive and stupid decision in retrospect considering nothing lasts forever.
Once the Vegas scene became dull, Matilda set her sights on Los Angeles in hopes she could make a name for herself. She shared an apartment with a couple she met online in a small two bedroom apartment and began working odd jobs to support herself. She released leaked tracks on a soundcloud account by the name of "Molly Bloom" a pseudonym she was especially passionate about, named for one of her favorite book characters. For a time she had been signed to a smaller record label who did nothing to promote or help further herself - stuck in a contract until her recent team was able to break it, she had been working two jobs and trying to juggle a fledgling singing career, a career she almost abandoned due to frustrations about being tossed to the side.
On that same account, she began leaking her own songs under a new account which had been titled "Rose of Sharon" which was inspired in part by the John Steinbeck character, a running motif in her pen names. "Video Games" had been one of several songs uploaded within the span of two weeks. It hadn't been a song she'd put much thought into but the interest and attention it garnered was a surprise. As her career began to blossom, she stuck with the professional name "Rose of Sharon" which she still performs under today despite her label's insistence she finds something more catchy, but she loves how it flows and it is a name dear to her, so she simply refused. The ugly side of fame, or the rise to fame, had reared its head which is something that Matilda is still getting used to even after the release of her sophomore album. She prefers to remain mysterious, many of her songs are part truth part fable but she has yet to confirm which is which. She revels in her enigmatic status and tries her best not to let critics and naysayers get under her skin - something that she had trouble doing earlier, she had lashed out on social media and spoke too crudely and bluntly in interviews after a string of shoddy performance and anyone who had something negative to say about her or the music she wrote. Needless to say, she's steeled herself a bit better since then but it doesn't really show.
